HEALTH AND SAFETY MANAGER ( Contract) 
Location: Ferndale, MIPay: $40-$50Shift: DaysJob Type: Part Time Contract - The position is structured as part-time, with a preference for 2 to 4 working days per week.

Our client is currently seeking a contract Environmental Manager.  This position offers a unique opportunity to support vital environmental, health, and safety (EHS) operations within a collaborative and mission-driven environment. The initial term is expected to last approximately six months, with the potential to transition into a permanent role depending on evolving business needs.
This role focuses heavily on occupational health and safety, with responsibilities closely aligned to those of a traditional Environmental Manager—though with added emphasis on managing workplace safety, compliance, and risk. The company prefers candidates with a background in chemistry or chemical engineering and values experience that bridges technical expertise with hands-on EHS program leadership.
 SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities within the guidelines of the Vision, Mission, Quality Policy and Environmental Management Statements
  • Duties and responsibilities are guided by well-defined, repeatable processes that are the key to meeting customer expectations and must be followed or changed as defined in guidelines
  • General responsibilities listed below describe the duties and responsibilities for continuous improvement
  • Utilize procedures to prevent product, service, environmental, health & safety and process non-conformances
  • Identify and record any problems
  • Find solutions to problems through prescribed problem solving methods
  • Identify and implement process efficiency measures utilizing Value Stream Mapping, and other Lean Manufacturing and software tools
  • Effectively implement solutions for problems
  • Control the use of non-conforming product/service/process
  • Monitor and improve respective measurables
  • Ensure that environmental issues are managed according to legal requirements, the environmental policy, the environmental management system procedures and good management practices
  • Maintain an awareness of significant environmental impacts, actual or potential, of work activities
  • Maintain an awareness of environmental benefits of improved environmental performance and continual improvement
  • Maintain an awareness of objectives and targets pertaining to work and the importance of achieving the objectives and targets 
  • Understand the Safety Policy and all relevant procedures including the Contractor, Communication, Periodic Review of Regulatory Compliance, Environmental and Other Requirements, and the Emergency Preparedness and Response Procedures
 PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides global health and safety program management, including on-line training, and any related program development
  • Maintains the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Management System, including contracts, software oversight, and any related label and DOT shipping requirements in U.S. and other global formats
  • Conducts research and discover methods to prevent, control and eliminate health and safety concerns and develops related programs to maintain compliance
  • Provides support to the EHS Coordinator, with EHS Coordinator management responsibilities coming from EHS Director, Community Relations, in all relevant areas
  • Interfaces professionally with regulatory agencies and insurance providers, as needed to fulfil regulatory requirements
  • Maintains awareness of all U.S., Canadian, Mexican, Brazilian, and European laws and regulations pertaining to health and safety, safety data sheets, labeling, and transportation regulations/issues 
  • Identifies health, safety, and environmental impact of all new products, processes and projects
  • Reports all health and safety issues or concerns to management, provides oversight to reduce or eliminate risks and informs the company of progress and problems in related areas
  • Provides health and safety information to internal and external customers actively and upon request
  • Conducts, coordinates and/or administer employee, customer and contractor health, safety and environmental training
  • Administers the worker’s compensation program in cooperation with Human Resources
  • Administers employee medical monitoring and respirator examination programs
  • Conduct safety inspections and audits, cross-functional pre-startup safety reviews, and Process Hazard Analysis (FMEAs) and related documents for Process Safety Management
  • Creates and maintain regulatory required health and safety programs and procedures for company Products
  • Performs EHS Supplier Audits
  • Interfaces with, and monitors contracted security company and related security functions, including access control
  • Orders and stocks safety supplies needed by onsite and offsite personnel
  • Contracts and/or coordinates with contactors on fire system testing, approved capital projects, and other related matters
  • Assists with environmental regulatory programs, including air monitoring program, as needed. 
  • Performs variety of tasks often changing on short notice
 QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Four Year Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene or a related field
  • Chemical manufacturing experience of some sort required; solvents, paint, etc
  • Training and experience in health and safety issues within manufacturing setting required
  • Computer skills including working knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Management experience, leadership skills
  • Independent and self-motivated worker
  • Able to work without close supervision
  • Good organizational skills
 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to inspect all areas where potential compliance concerns exist
  • Must be capable of carrying instrumentation weighing 30 pounds
  • Must be able to hear and detect potential compliance concerns
